Metropolitan Mine

Metropolitan Coal Mine is located in the township of Helensburgh in the Southern coalfields of NSW. The mine is approximately 50 kilometres south of Sydney and 30km north of Wollongong.  Founded in 1888, the mine today holds claim to being Australia’s oldest continually operating coal mine.

The coal leases held by Metropolitan cover an area of over 5190 hectares, with the mine currently producing approximately 1.5 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of saleable hard and semi-hard coking coal.

On the 23 June 2009 (after an extensive environmental assessment process) the mine was awarded a NSW Part 3A approval (under the NSW Environmental Planning & Assessment Act). This approval provides for a further 23 years of production at Metropolitan Coal Mine, with increasing levels of up to 2.8 mtpa saleable.

Metropolitan Coal Mine utilises the Port Kembla Coal Terminal (PKCT) to export the majority of its product.  Around 90 percent of coal produced at the mine is exported under contract to customers in Japan, India, South America, China and Europe. The remaining product is trucked to local industry consumers.
